Beto O’Rourke is taking the Texas redistricting fight national
Suddenly, Beto O’Rourke is everywhere again.
He just had a rally in Philadelphia, another in Baltimore, and is planning to head off to Nebraska early next month.
And he’s worked in speeches to the NAACP Convention in North Carolina and the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., and made in-person TV hits on CNN with Jake Tapper and the PBS Newshour.
Over the last 30 days, he’s held 10 rallies total from Texas to the East Coast and has another planned on Friday night in Austin with U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro, Jasmine Crockett and State Rep. James Talarico among others.
Why?
As President Donald Trump pushes Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s congressional districts, O’Rourke told me he’s trying to use whatever national platform he still has to make sure that the rest of the nation understands the fight isn’t just about the Lone Star State.
If Trump gets the five new GOP districts he wants out of Texas, the U.S. House could remain in Republican hands beyond 2026, giving the president more leeway to advance his agenda. While Texas is ground zero, he said Democrats in other states need to understand that the urgency of what’s happening in Austin will affect them later.
“I want to make sure everyone in this country knows this,” O’Rourke said in an interview.
That means pushing Democrats in other states to register more voters for the midterms in 2026, calling on them to redraw their own congressional districts to counter Texas Republicans and making sure they are helping Texas Democrats any way they can.
