Inept and dysfunctional are two of the more diplomatic words you could choose to describe the Trump administration.
Colossally moronic and self-defeating might be more accurate, but would surely count as a tad unvarnished.
So it is more than a little ironic that the British ambassador to Planet Trump should have turned into the diplomatic equivalent of the walking dead for saying what the entire world (outside the Oval Office) knows to be true about the 45th president of the United States.
If there were lifetime Oscars for stating the blindingly obvious, Sir Kim Darroch would surely need to prepare his acceptance speech for reporting that Donald Trump was “radiating insecurity.”
Trump radiates insecurity much like the Chernobyl reactor scatters gamma rays: obviously and without regard to anyone’s safety.
If there were any dispute about Darroch’s statements of fact, Trump himself – God bless his colossally moronic and self-defeating nature – confirmed them with a couple of tweets. [Continue reading…]
Overall, the leaked cables show a skilled diplomat reporting back on a complicated and chaotic administration in an undiplomatic way. But Darroch seems to get the Trump administration pretty well. His advice to his superiors is sound.
Why his cables were leaked and what his enemies in London are up to is for the Brits to worry about and deal with. If the U.K. government chooses to get rid of Darroch for telling the truth about the Trump administration, that’s its business. But everyone here in Washington will know that the leaks were just a pretense and the British media was all too willing to become a tool of the leakers.
The next British ambassador might send back cables saying everything is fine here and the Trump administration runs like a well-oiled machine. But that kind of delusion does nothing to help preserve the U.S.-U.K. special relationship. [Continue reading…]
