Driver in Maine, not target of a warrant, shot and killed by ICE in front of three-year old daughter

The Daily Beast reports:

An ICE-involved shooting has left one man dead in Maine, with an eyewitness saying he was killed in front of his three-year-old daughter, who was wearing Bluey pajamas.

The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition identified the victim as a 26-year-old Colombian man. The group said he was authorized to work in the U.S. and had been issued a Social Security number. He was reportedly heading to work at the time he was shot.

The account appeared to change later Monday. Sen. Angus King, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who confirmed that the man who was fatally shot was “NOT the target of the warrant.” King had earlier said Mullin told him the man was the target of a warrant.

The victim’s identity has not yet been publicly confirmed by federal agents, but it comes less than one week after a federal agent shot and killed a man in Texas who was also not the target of a department operation. [Continue reading…]

Portland Press Herald reports:

Across the intersection, resident Em Akerley was in her second floor apartment when she heard a gunshot around 7:15 a.m., followed by about seven more pops. Her first thought was that it was a drive-by shooting. She hadn’t heard any yelling before the shots rang out.

Akerley watched from her window as the small white car circled in the intersection as if the driver had no control. She said two federal agents with vests on pressed up against the driver’s side door trying to guide it to not hit anything.”

“All of a sudden it seemed like six people with vests on were running down the street,” she said. “I didn’t know where they were coming from.”

Akerley said agents appeared to crash a vehicle into the smaller car to get it to stop, then the driver was pulled out.

“No one went to him and no one did anything,” she said, her voice choking with tears. [Continue reading…]

Portland Press Herald reports:

Protesters descended on Sen. Susan Collins’ Biddeford office Monday following a deadly shooting that authorities said involved federal immigration agents.

Dozens of people crowded the entryway of the Main St. office Monday afternoon shouting “Vote her out!” On the street, others carried signs reading, “NO ICE” and “Melt ICE.”

Collins, a five-time Republican incumbent, is currently seeking reelection. She has faced criticism from Maine Democrats in recent weeks for her June vote in favor of a $70 billion funding bill to support Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened,” Collins said in a written statement. “It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site, and the FBI is investigating.” [Continue reading…]
