Trump promises to rename Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America
Donald Trump wants to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” he revealed in a bonkers news conference Tuesday.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory,” he said. “The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name.”
The Gulf of Mexico, as it was named as far back as the 16th century by Spaniards, is a semi-enclosed sea in the southeastern corner of North America. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida all have coastline with the body of water.
The announcement comes amid a very public rift between the president-elect and Mexico’s leadership, including its president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
Trump disparaged the top U.S. ally again on Tuesday.
“Mexico is really in trouble, a lot of trouble, very dangerous place,” he said, claiming the nation is controlled by drug cartels.”
The president-elect later added that Mexico “has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.” Until then, he again threatened to place “substantial tariffs” on all goods from Mexico and Canada.
“The drugs that are coming through are at record numbers, record numbers,” Trump claimed, without citing evidence. “So we’re going to make up for that by putting tariffs on Mexico and Canada.”
Marjorie Taylor Greene indicated shortly after Trump’s news conference that she would introduce new legislation “ASAP” to make the name-change official. [Continue reading…]
